Martin and Eva came all the way from Norway to get married in Montenegro, at Talici Hill villa above Sutomore. The afternoon brought a warm ceremony under an olive tree, and by evening the real Norwegian wedding traditions were in full swing.
A Norwegian wedding at Talici Hill Villa near Sutomore
Talici Hill sits a little apart and higher up than Sutomore, with a lovely view of the sea. It is a large estate of olive and cypress trees, with an old stone villa and an authentic design.
Eva’s morning
The bride’s day started with getting ready alongside her bridesmaids. While they did her makeup and helped her into her dress, the room was full of laughter, jokes and smiles.

Then we went over to the groom. The guys had just finished dressing, so we shot a few group frames with them before the ceremony. There was also a moment that is hard to forget: his friends tossed Martin up into the air several times.
The ceremony under the olive tree
The ceremony took place under an olive tree, on the villa’s wide grounds looking out over the sea. Martin and Eva read their vows to each other, and it was the most emotional moment of the whole day: they cried and laughed at the same time.
Cocktail hour and portraits in the sunset light
Right after the ceremony the cocktail hour began, with a bartender mixing drinks for the guests. A little later, as the sun dropped lower, we shot a few portraits of the couple around the villa in soft golden light.
A Norwegian dinner and its traditions
Dinner turned out to be the liveliest part of any wedding we have ever seen. Martin, Eva and their guests from Norway brought their own wedding traditions along, and the evening became an almost non-stop game. Here is what happened, and what each part is called:
- Clinking the glass (in Norwegian, klirring i glasset): when guests tap a fork or knife against a glass, the newlyweds climb right up onto their chairs and kiss.
- Stamping on the floor (tramping i gulvet): when the guests stamp their feet together, the couple has to kiss under the table instead.
- Kissing while one of the pair is away from the table: the moment Eva steps out, all the women take turns hurrying to kiss Martin on the cheek, racing to finish before she comes back. And when Martin leaves the table, it is the men’s turn to rush over and kiss Eva.
- Toastmasters (toastmaster): two hosts led the entire dinner, and the program ran long and was far from only speeches, with songs and poems along the way.
