The short answer: a realistic budget usually lands somewhere between €20,000 and €100,000 or more, and within that range it all comes down to your guest count, your venue, and the season. An intimate ceremony for two costs a fraction of a big celebration for a hundred people, and that is completely normal.

The honest answer: a wedding in Montenegro can cost €20,000, or €100,000, or more. The range is wide because there are so many variables. The main ones are how many guests you have, which venue you choose, and the season you marry in. A small gathering of a dozen guests will naturally cost less than a celebration for a hundred people with a venue booked out for the whole day.

At the same time, Montenegro stays noticeably more affordable than Italy, France, or the Greek islands, with a very similar Mediterranean look: the same mountains by the sea, old stone towns, views over the Adriatic. Budget by guest count

The easiest way to estimate your budget is by guest count: it drives the catering, the size of the venue, and the logistics. Below are approximate ranges, built from real prices for individual services (each line is covered in detail further down). Treat it as a guide, not a quote.

Catering is almost always the biggest line item, which is why guest count affects the total more than anything else. If you want it beautiful but leaner, an intimate format or an elopement gives you the same seaside setting for far less. What makes up the budget: prices by category

Here are the main expense categories with approximate prices for each. Further down we look at the most important ones in more detail.

Venue, catering, and decor: where most of the money goes

Venue

This could be a dedicated wedding venue, a restaurant, a hall, a hotel, a villa, or somewhere else. There are open-air spots with no restrooms and no shelter from rain or sun, and those run from €300 to €500. Villas are usually rented as a whole for 3 nights, so the grounds are entirely yours: roughly from €5,000 for 10 guests to €7,500 for 25 guests. Another option is to book a restaurant for a welcome cocktail and dinner. On top of food and drinks, a restaurant usually charges a fee to close for a private event, which can run from €3,000 to €20,000, and sometimes it is a minimum deposit instead of a closing fee.

Catering and drinks

Catering is almost always the biggest line in the budget. Plan for at least €120 per person for a set menu with cold and hot starters and a main course. An open bar starts at around €80 for 4 hours, with extra hours charged separately. This is exactly why guest count affects the total more than anything else: every guest adds to the catering bill.

Photo and video

This covers the photographer's and videographer's work and the equipment. A wedding day is usually at least 8 hours. What affects the final total the most

If you need to move the budget up or down, here are the levers by how much they matter, from the biggest to the smallest:

• Guest count. The main lever. Catering is priced per person, so every guest adds to the bill. Fewer guests, a noticeably smaller budget.
• Season and day of the week. The most popular months cost more, and weekends are in higher demand than weekdays, so venues may ask for more.
• Exclusivity of the venue. Closing a restaurant entirely, renting a whole villa, or a luxury hotel costs many times more than an open-air spot.
• The programme of the day. The length of the shoot, the number of courses in the set menu, live music on top of the DJ, fireworks, it all adds to the total.

Music, entertainment, and fireworks

Music usually comes in a few parts: a DJ for the welcome cocktail and the party, live music for the ceremony (violin or piano) or a church choir for a religious ceremony, and in the evening, in addition to the DJ, couples often bring in a live band. A DJ runs roughly €250 to €350 per hour, and a live band costs more. Musicians usually bring their own equipment and it is already in the price, but extra lighting or a disco ball may be charged separately.

To entertain guests, some couples invite performers or traditional dance groups. Fireworks start at around €1,500 per minute, though they can cost more, and in the dry season they are sometimes banned because of fire risk. A beautiful and safer alternative is cold fountains (often for the first dance) or large sparklers: guests form two lines to make a corridor and the couple walks through it, and the shots come out stunning.

Prices by season

The season in Montenegro affects both price and comfort, but not the way many people expect. The most popular time for weddings is from mid-May to the end of June and from late August through September: the weather is warm but comfortable, the light for photos is at its best, and venues are geared up for weddings. Those dates, and weekends, are in the highest demand, which is why venue prices can be higher then.

July and August are rarely chosen for weddings: it is very hot, everything is packed with tourists, and some venues at the height of the season will not close for a private event at all. Because of the mountains, the sun sets early in Montenegro, so the ceremony is usually set two or three hours before sunset, and the best light is in late spring and early autumn. If you want to save, flexibility on the date helps: a weekday and a less popular date are usually cheaper than a peak weekend. The real off-season, late autumn and winter, is quieter and more affordable, but the weather is already a gamble.

Official marriage registration and its cost

Weddings come in three formats. A symbolic ceremony is the most flexible in place and script, but it does not make the marriage legal. Official (civil) registration makes the marriage legal: the cheapest way is to register at the opština on a separate day, while official on-site registration (where the registrar comes to your venue) costs a little more. A religious ceremony is also possible.

The good news: the documents are inexpensive and a small part of the budget. Foreigners usually need papers with an apostille and a sworn translation, and it is worth leaving extra time for submission and registration. • Outfits. There is almost no choice of dresses and suits in Montenegro, so it is best to bring everything with you, and that gets planned in advance, at home.
• Transport and car rental. Guest transfers, taxis, a boat or yacht, a car for getting around. The amount depends on the number of guests and distances, and your planner can give you a closer estimate.
