Yes, you can plan a beautiful and calm proposal for a gay couple in Montenegro. Everything sits close together on this small stretch of the Adriatic: the quiet coves of the Bay of Kotor, green mountains above the water, and soft evening light. If you are still at the early stage of planning the trip, start with our general guide to a proposal in Montenegro. This article focuses on same-sex couples.

I am Mariia Sosnina, a photographer in Montenegro. Vasilii Khmelev shoots the video, and we photograph proposals for every couple with the same care. Below I tell you honestly how friendly the country is to same-sex couples, where we shoot, and how the shoot itself works, so that on the day you have nothing to think about but each other.

The short version

  • Montenegro is friendly to same-sex couples. Life partnerships have been recognised here since 15 July 2020, and on the coast and in the tourist towns the atmosphere is calm.
  • We offer exactly two options for a proposal shoot: a boat in the Bay of Kotor, or the viewpoint above Sveti Stefan.
  • We book the boat ourselves, and we pick the time by the light, usually the soft evening hour before sunset.
  • We shoot tactfully and from a distance, and we cover the whole moment on photo and video.
  • Official same-sex marriage is not possible in Montenegro. A life partnership has been recognised by law since 2020, and it gives real rights.

Is Montenegro friendly to same-sex couples?

Montenegro was the first country in the Western Balkans to recognise same-sex couples. The life-partnership law has been in force since 15 July 2020, and the first partnership was registered on 25 July 2021. A partnership gives a couple real rights: inheritance, guardianship, property matters, hospital visits, and protection from domestic violence.

On the coast, in the Bay of Kotor and the tourist towns, the atmosphere is calm. These towns are used to couples from all over the world. Attitudes vary elsewhere in the country, so we protect your privacy and plan the shoot around your comfort. Nobody can promise absolute safety anywhere, but over years of shooting in these places we see friendliness far more often than anything else.

Where we shoot a gay proposal in Montenegro

You will not have to choose a spot from pretty pictures. We work in two places we know well, and both stay quiet even in high season.

OptionWhy it works
A boat in the Bay of KotorQuiet water, sunset, and nobody around. We book the boat, and you just come to the pier.
The viewpoint above Sveti StefanAn open view of the island and the sea from above, on land, with no half-day drives.

I walk through the boat option step by step in our guide to a boat proposal.

I will be just as honest about where we do not shoot. Old Kotor and the Budva beaches are far too crowded, so there is no privacy at all. The viewpoints above the Bay of Kotor mean traffic jams where you can be stuck for a couple of hours, so we do not take couples up there. And the climb to the fortress above Kotor is long and hard in the heat, and it adds nothing to a proposal.

How the proposal shoot works

Our job here is simple. The two of you live the moment, and everything else is on us. We book the boat, we pick the time by the light (usually the soft evening hour before sunset), and we agree the signal in advance, so we catch the exact second you ask.

During the shoot we work tactfully and from a distance. We cover it on photo and video, we never direct your emotions, and we do not ask anyone to pose before it happens. You can see how that turns out in this gay boat proposal album from Perast.

When to come, plus a few practical things

Late spring and early autumn are the easiest times to come. It is warm then, and you avoid the summer crowds. The light is softest in the evening hour before sunset, and that is when we usually plan the shoot.

  • Arrive a couple of days early, so you settle into the place and stop thinking about the journey.
  • Keep the ring in a discreet pocket, and on the boat keep it in a closed box.
  • It can get fresh over the water in the bay towards evening, so bring a light jacket.

After the yes: partnership and wedding

Let me be plain about the legal side. You cannot officially register a same-sex marriage in Montenegro, because the constitution bans it. What the country does recognise, since 15 July 2020, is a life partnership, and that gives a couple real rights.

So the proposal happens here, and you can decide later, calmly and without any rush, how you want to formalise or celebrate your union. If you do want a celebration after the trip, read why Montenegro is such a good place for an LGBT wedding.

Frequently asked questions

Is same-sex marriage legal in Montenegro?

Official same-sex marriage is not possible in Montenegro, because the constitution bans it. Since 15 July 2020 the country does recognise life partnerships, and they give a couple rights to inheritance, guardianship, property matters, hospital visits and more.

Where do you shoot the proposal?

We have two options: a boat in the Bay of Kotor and the viewpoint above Sveti Stefan. Old Kotor and the Budva beaches are far too crowded, and the viewpoints above the bay can mean long traffic jams, so we do not shoot in those places.

Is it safe to plan a proposal as a gay couple?

The coast and the tourist towns see couples from all over the world, and the atmosphere there is calm. Attitudes vary elsewhere in the country, so we protect your privacy and plan the shoot around your comfort.

When is the best time to come?

Late spring and early autumn are the easiest. It is warm then, but without the summer crowds. The light is softest in the evening hour before sunset, and that is when we usually plan the shoot.

Can the whole thing stay tactful and private?

Yes. We shoot from a distance, we agree the signal in advance, and we work in places where nobody hurries you, such as a boat in the Bay of Kotor.

Do you photograph same-sex couples?

Yes. We photograph every couple with the same care and the same attention to your moment.

Do we need a wedding planner for the proposal?

You do not need a planner for the proposal itself. We book the boat, and we choose the place and the time. If you later want to celebrate your partnership, we will recommend a planner we trust.

Ready to plan it

Montenegro is calm, beautiful and friendly to same-sex couples, and that is a good combination for the day you ask the question. I am Mariia Sosnina, a wedding photographer in Montenegro, and what matters most to me is that you feel free in front of the camera.

Look through our Montenegro wedding stories to see how we work, then write to us. We will help you choose between the two options, book the boat, pick the time by the light, and cover the whole moment on photo and video. And if you want a celebration after the yes, we will recommend a planner we trust.
