Where Eagle Eye is

The villa sits in the hills above Kotor, in the Škaljari area, about four kilometres from the old town. A winding road leads up, but it is a short climb and a coach can manage it. That matters more than it sounds for a wedding: if your guests travel as a group, you do not need to arrange separate minibuses.

Tivat airport is a short drive away, which is easy on guests arriving on the day they land. Two towns sit below, Kotor and Tivat, so there is plenty of choice for accommodation.

Why couples take the whole place

Renting a villa for a wedding in Montenegro solves the main problem with restaurant venues: there will be no strangers nearby. At Eagle Eye you get all the houses and the whole property with the pool, so the day is built the way you want it.

• Only your people. Nobody is having lunch at the next table or walking through your photographs.
• Your own running order. Getting ready, the ceremony, dinner and dancing all happen on one property, with no transfers in between.

Terraces for the ceremony

There are several terraces, which gives you a choice: you can set the ceremony so the bay is behind you and seat the guests close together. Different terraces suit different guest numbers and different times of day, so the one you use is picked around your plan.

The lawn for dinner

Dinner is usually served on the lawn. It is the largest space, and it is what sets the capacity of the celebration.

The dance floor

Dancing happens on a flat, solid area on the grounds. It is easier to dance on than grass, and it sits away from the houses where guests sleep.

How many guests fit

Up to 100 people fit for the celebration. That number holds not because tables are squeezed together, but because the zones are spread across the property.

People come up here for the view above all. The terraces face the Bay of Tivat, and from there you can see Tivat airport and the planes taking off and landing. Guests waiting for the evening with a drink on the terrace tend to get stuck watching exactly that.

The sunset from the villa is good, and it is worth building the day around it. The practical conclusion is simple: set the ceremony so that dinner lands in the sunset hour rather than finishing long before it. The exact time shifts through the season, so we usually work the timing out together with the couple and the planner.

How the wedding day runs

Here is one of our own shoots. Nathan came from Australia, Frida from Norway, and they built the whole day around the villa. We started with the first look, then drove down for photographs in the old town of Kotor and came back up. The ceremony was led by a close friend of theirs rather than an official registrar, and it was genuinely warm.

Dinner fell at sunset, with the bay in view. Then came the Norwegian traditions: guests tapped their glasses to make the couple kiss, and kissed the bride or the groom whenever the other one left the table. After that, the first dance and the party.

Where guests sleep

Some guests stay at the villa itself, along with the couple. That suits the closest circle: nobody has to find a car late at night and the celebration can simply carry on.

Everyone else stays down below, in Kotor or Tivat. Both towns are close, there is plenty of choice at every budget, and the drive up is short. The usual pattern: the couple and the parents sleep at the villa, friends and wider family stay below, and one coach brings them up in the evening.

What you have to bring in

This is the main difference between a villa and a restaurant, and it is better to know it early. There is no kitchen here set up for a wedding banquet, so catering is hired from outside. Everything else arrives with it.

• Catering and bar. The menu, the chefs, the waiters, the drinks and the ice.
• Furniture. Tables, chairs and a lounge area if you want one.
• Tableware and linen. Plates, cutlery, glasses, tablecloths, napkins.
• Sound and light. A DJ or a band, the equipment, and lighting for the lawn and the dance area in the evening.
• Decor. The arch, the flowers, the place settings, everything that makes the grounds look like a wedding.

Every line is a separate supplier, a separate contract and a separate delivery slot up the hill. When to hold the wedding here

The venue is outdoors, so weddings happen in the warm months, roughly May to October.

High summer

July and August are the hottest. Open terraces are hard going in the middle of the day, so the ceremony moves to the evening and the daytime goes to getting ready. Guests coming up from below need extra time for the drive and the climb.

The edges of the season

May, June, September and October are milder and quieter, but rain is likelier. There is no indoor room here for a banquet for 100, so the backup is discussed with your planner early.

And an honest word about marquees: they are not straightforward in Montenegro. The option exists, but availability and terms are something the planner checks case by case, so do not treat a marquee as a solution you already have. The closer your date is to the edges of the season, the earlier this should come up.

What we photograph at the villa

There are several strong spots on the property, and they give a different picture through the day. The terraces with the bay behind them carry the ceremony and the couple's portraits, the lawn gives you the wide shots with guests at dinner, and the apartments work for the morning.
