The shoots I do in Budva

I shoot a few different types in Budva, and often it's the same outing, just in a different key. Some couples want an easy walk for two, some families want a day out with the kids, some people want one strong portrait, and some want a whole wedding. A typical session usually runs about 1.5 hours at a single spot, which is enough to stay relaxed and still come away with a beautiful, varied set. Love story and couple sessions

This one is about the two of you: a walk through the old town, shots by the sea, real emotion and no forced poses. It's a great fit for couples on a trip, for an anniversary, or simply for beautiful photos together. I keep you gently moving and cue you on where to stand and where to look, so even people who freeze in front of a camera usually loosen up fast. Family photo sessions

A family shoot in Budva is built around the kids and the mood of the day, not around perfect poses. We walk, the kids stay themselves, and I catch the natural moments along with warm shots of everyone together. For families with children, calmer spots away from the big crowds and the soft evening light of golden hour work best, once the heat eases. Solo and portrait sessions

A solo shoot in Budva is the way to go if you want strong portraits: for yourself, for social media, for a meaningful personal occasion. Here we work more with the light, the old stone and the sea as a backdrop. It can be a relaxed portrait walk or a more focused session built around a specific idea. We'll agree on the format and the length in advance, so the shoot lands on the right hour of light.

Wedding photography

I photograph weddings both in Budva itself and at venues along the Budva Riviera. At weddings we work as a two-person studio, me and Vasilii Khmelev: I take the photos and Vasilii handles the video. I work calmly and unobtrusively, so the day runs its own course and the photos hold a real story rather than a staged one. Where to shoot in Budva: the spots

Budva has one big advantage for a shoot: very different frames sit close together. The stone lanes of the old town, the fortress walls right above the sea, open beaches and the promenade with its view of St Nicholas island. You don't have to cross half the country to change the scene, it all comes together on one easy walk. That's exactly why I usually map the route in advance rather than hunting for spots on the day.

Here are the main spots where I shoot in Budva. Treat it as a guide, since the final route depends on the type of shoot, the season and the light on the actual day.

• The old town - stone lanes, squares and churches behind the fortress walls. An atmospheric backdrop, though it gets busy by day in season, so we choose the hour carefully.
• The citadel - the fortress crowning the old town, with walls and views over the sea and the island from above. Entry is paid, 5 euros per person, but the frames from the walls are worth it.
• Mogren beach - cliffs, open sea and a path along the shore just beyond the old town. Wild rock and plenty of room for the frame.
• The promenade and the views of St Nicholas island - an open view over the sea and the island, and the old stone above the water turns into a striking backdrop that adds real depth to the frame.

When to shoot: light, season, crowds

The light in Budva is best at golden hour, just before sunset. In those hours the sea and the old stone soak up a warm, soft glow, and the shadows grow long and lovely. I work out the start time in advance for the season and the specific spot: in Montenegro the sun drops behind the mountains earlier than the official sunset in the forecast, so catching the soft light on time really matters. At midday the sun is harsh, the shadows are hard, and the beaches and old town hit their peak crowds, so I keep the middle of the day off the schedule.

Season-wise, my favourites are late spring and early autumn. Toward the end of May, in June and in September it's warm, but without the peak heat and crowds of July and August, and the evening light is especially soft. You can shoot in summer too, we just move to the evening golden hour, away from the midday sun and the crowds.

Budva lives loud and busy in summer, it's the liveliest resort on the coast. That's why we make the best frames at golden hour before sunset, when the beaches and the old town quieten down and the light turns soft. So I plan the timing of a Budva shoot in advance, rather than improvising it on the day. That way we make the softest light and steer clear of the main crowds.

Where else I shoot along the Budva Riviera

Beyond Budva itself, I shoot a lot all along the Budva Riviera. The views change everywhere here: the sea, the cliffs and the light shift with almost every bend in the road. If you're planning a shoot beyond Budva, we can easily extend the route along the coast, toward Sveti Stefan, Milocer and Petrovac. One of the most recognisable frames comes from the viewpoint above Sveti Stefan.

I also shoot at weddings along the coast. For example, there was a shoot on the beach in Petrovac, a calm, intimate day by the water. Among the nearby weddings I'd also mention a wedding at the Galija beach club. These are places along the same riviera, and I know them well for their light and their views.
