Photographer in Kotor: couple, family & wedding shoots

Looking for a photographer in Kotor? I'm Mariia Sosnina, and I live in Montenegro and shoot here all the time: love story and couple sessions, family shoots, solo portraits and weddings. Whatever the occasion, we'll find the right format together. Because I know the town from the inside, I can tell you straight away where the frame looks best and which hour gives the softest light, so you don't burn your trip hunting for locations.

We work as a two-person studio, me and Vasilii Khmelev. I take the photos, and if you'd like video too, we handle that as well. We keep things calm, with no rush and no stiff posing, so the pictures show the real you and not poses you've talked yourself into. Below I'll walk you through the shoots I do in Kotor, the best spots in town, when to come for good light and how to lock in a date.

The short version

  • In Kotor I shoot love story, family, portrait and wedding sessions. One team covers several styles.
  • I live in Montenegro and shoot in Kotor constantly, so my tips on spots and light come from real experience, not a brochure.
  • Best spots: the UNESCO old town, the Dobrota waterfront and the views over the Bay of Kotor. The fortress walls make a great backdrop.
  • The light is best during golden hour, just before sunset. Midday the old town fills up with cruise-ship crowds, so timing matters.
  • Price and format depend on what you need. To book a shoot in Kotor, message me ahead of time and we'll settle on a date.

The shoots I do in Kotor

I shoot a few different styles in Kotor, and often it's all one trip, just with a different mood. Some couples want an easy walk for two, some families want a relaxed day with the kids, some people want one strong portrait, and some want a whole wedding covered. Here's a quick look at each format so you can see what fits you. We'll shape the details and the price around what you need, rather than a one-size-fits-all price list.

Love story and couple sessions

This one is about the two of you: a walk through the old town, shots by the water, real emotion and no forced poses. It's perfect for couples on a trip, for an anniversary, or simply for beautiful photos together. I keep you gently moving and give little cues on where to stand and where to look, so even people who freeze in front of a camera usually loosen up fast. You can see how it comes together in my love story photo session gallery, where I've gathered couple stories.

Family shoots

A family shoot in Kotor is built around the kids and the mood of the day, not around perfect poses. We walk, the kids stay themselves, and I catch the natural moments along with a few warm shots of everyone together. Families with children do best in calmer spots away from the crowds, in the soft evening light of golden hour once the heat eases off. You'll find more examples in my family photo session gallery.

Portrait and solo sessions

A solo shoot in Kotor is the way to go if you want strong portraits: for yourself, for social media, or for a personal milestone. Here we work more with the light, the texture of the old town's stone and the bay views as a backdrop. It can be a relaxed portrait walk or a more focused session built around a specific idea. We'll agree on the format and the length in advance, so the shoot lands on the right hour of light.

Wedding photography

I photograph weddings both in Kotor itself and at venues along the bay. I work calmly and quietly so the day flows as it should, and the photos hold a real story rather than a set of staged moments. As a wedding photographer in Kotor, I plan the timing around the light and the best spots for photos well in advance. You can see how that looks in my wedding portfolio, for example Igor and Veronika's wedding in Kotor. Here's another intimate day by the water: a small ceremony with a view of the Bay of Kotor.

Where to shoot in Kotor: the spots

Kotor has one big advantage for a shoot: very different textures sit close together, all within a short radius. The stone lanes of the old town, the bay water right by the gates, and mountains that rise straight up from the shore. You don't have to drive halfway across the country to change the scene, it all comes together on one easy walk. That's why I usually plan the route ahead of time instead of hunting for spots on the day.

Here are the main spots where I shoot in Kotor. Treat it as a guide, since the final route depends on the style, the season and the light on the actual day.

  • The UNESCO old town - stone streets, squares and churches. A gorgeous backdrop, but busy during the day, so we pick the hour carefully.
  • The Dobrota waterfront - a calm promenade along the water, plenty of room and a view over the bay, with far less of the crush you get in the centre.
  • Views over the Bay of Kotor - the water, the mountains and the soft evening light give you the most recognisable Kotor shot.
  • The fortress walls as a backdrop - the staircase and the walls above town work like a stage set, and you can shoot from below without the long climb up.

To make it easier to picture, here's how the shoot styles usually match up with the spots in Kotor. It's a guide, not a hard rule, and we'll adjust everything to your day.

When to shoot: light, season, crowds

The light in Kotor is best at golden hour, just before sunset. In those hours the bay water and the old-town stone soak up a warm, soft glow. One thing worth knowing: Kotor is ringed by mountains, and the sun drops behind them noticeably earlier than the official sunset. So I always work out the exact start time, to catch you in that soft light before it slips away. At midday the sun is harsh, the shadows are hard, and the old town is at its most crowded, so I try to keep the middle of the day off the schedule.

Season-wise, my favourites are late spring and early autumn. Toward the end of May, in June and in September it's warm, but without the peak heat of July and August, and the evening light is especially soft. You can absolutely shoot in summer too, we just move to the evening golden hour, away from the midday sun and the crowds.

The light over the Bay of Kotor is at its best during golden hour, just before sunset. But there's a catch only the locals know. Kotor is ringed by mountains, and the sun hides behind them long before the official sunset. That's why I always work out the exact start time myself, to catch everyone in that beautiful soft light before it's gone.Mariia Sosnina

Good to know: during the day, big groups pour into the old town from the cruise ships, and the narrow streets get tight. By golden hour, just before sunset, the daytime crowds have usually thinned out, which is exactly when I shoot in the old town. And the popular dates in late spring and early autumn are best booked well ahead.

Where else I shoot around the Bay of Kotor

Beyond the town itself, I shoot a lot along the whole Bay of Kotor. The views change everywhere you look: the water, the mountains and the light shift with every bend in the road. If you're planning a shoot beyond Kotor as well, we can easily extend the route around the bay, toward Perast and out toward Kamenari. You can see what the evening light over the water looks like in my Bay of Kotor gallery.

I also shoot at wedding venues around the bay. For example, Forza Terra by the water and Villa Eagle Eye with its panorama from above. These venues sit on the shore of the Bay of Kotor rather than in the town itself, but for light and views they're the same places I know well.

How the shoot works and how to book

I build the shoot around you, not the other way around. First we talk through the format and the style, then I suggest a route and the hour of light to suit it, and on the day we simply walk and shoot at an easy pace. Afterwards I select and edit the frames and hand you the finished set. We agree on the price and the length in advance, for your specific format.

  • We talk through the idea - the style, the mood, how many people and what matters most to you.
  • We pick the time and spots - I suggest a route and the hour of light in Kotor or around the bay.
  • We shoot - calmly and without rushing, and I cue you on where to stand and how to move.
  • I deliver the results - selected and edited frames as a finished set.

If you're planning a shoot in Kotor, message me ahead of time and we'll settle on a date and a format to suit you. As a photographer in Montenegro, I'll point you to the best hour of light and the best spots for photos, and I'll deliver a lively set that really shows your day. My latest work is gathered in the wedding photography gallery.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of shoots do you do in Kotor?

My main spots are the UNESCO old town, the Dobrota waterfront and the views over the Bay of Kotor, and the fortress walls make a great backdrop. We pick the final route to suit the style, the season and the light on the actual day.

When's the best time and season for a photo shoot?

The light is best at golden hour, just before sunset.
